Your Color History: Notes to Bring Before a Color Consultation

A color consultation starts with an accurate record of what has already been done to your hair. Before visiting Young Styles Beauty Salon, write down previous salon and at-home color, approximate dates, and the areas you want to discuss. This worksheet documents your starting point; it does not predict which service or outcome will be suitable.

Build a simple color timeline

Work backward from your most recent color service. Record each event separately, even if several appointments seemed similar. Approximate information is still useful when clearly labeled. If you cannot remember a date, write a season, month range, or how long ago it occurred instead of guessing.

Include color changes made at a salon and at home. Your notes should describe what happened, not evaluate whether it was done correctly.

  • Approximate date or date range
  • Salon service or at-home application
  • Full head, roots, highlights, selected sections, or another placement
  • Color before the service and the change you requested
  • Any detail you do not remember, marked “unknown”

List at-home color separately

Create a separate list for every at-home color application you remember, including applications limited to roots or individual areas. Bring packaging or a clear photo of it if you still have it, but do not try to reconstruct missing details from memory.

If someone else applied the color, note that too. The important point is to make uncertainty visible so it can be discussed during the consultation.

  • When it was applied
  • Where it was applied
  • Shade name or identifying details, if known
  • Whether it covered previous color
  • Anything uncertain, marked “unknown”

Map your current areas of concern

Describe where your concerns appear rather than using one general statement about all of your hair. You might notice differences at the roots, around the face, through the lengths, or at the ends. Note whether the issue appears throughout the hair or only in particular sections.

Keep these observations separate from your desired look. This gives the consultation two clear topics: the current starting point and the direction you would like to explore.

  • Which areas look different from the rest?
  • Where do you notice unevenness, unwanted depth, or an unwanted tone?
  • Are any sections intentionally different?
  • What would you most like the consultation to address first?

Choose reference photos with a purpose

Bring a small group of photos that communicates specific preferences. For each image, write what you want the stylist to notice, such as the overall direction, brightness near the face, depth at the roots, or distribution of lighter sections. A photo can also show what you do not want.

Photos are discussion references, not forecasts. Your recorded history and current hair provide context for deciding what questions to explore.

  • One or two images showing your preferred overall direction
  • A close-up that highlights a placement or contrast you like
  • An example of something you want to avoid
  • A note explaining the relevant detail in each image

Prepare consultation decisions

Young Styles Beauty Salon lists root colour, full colour, highlights, and balayage among its services. Rather than choosing from the service name alone, use your consultation to connect your history, concerns, and references with the available options.

End your notes with questions that require clarification. If a previous service, formula, or date is unknown, say so directly and ask whether that missing information affects the discussion.

  • Which parts of my history are most relevant to the options we are discussing?
  • Should we focus on roots, selected sections, or the overall color direction?
  • Do my reference photos point toward highlights, balayage, full colour, or another conversation?
  • Which details need to be confirmed before choosing a service?
  • What should I record after this visit for a more complete future history?
